Substance Abuse Research Grants | Charles Koch Foundation - 0 views

    In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the Charles Koch Foundation seeks to support research projects (e.g. papers, conferences, workshops, etc.) that explore innovative, community-based solutions that are targeted at destroying the root causes of substance abuse. To that end, we are actively soliciting proposals for projects to consider innovative solutions that seek to alleviate substance use disorders. We are especially interested in research that: - Addresses innovative ways to help individuals overcome substance use disorders, prevent drug overdoses, and increase the willingness of individuals to seek treatment for substance abuse. - Explores the root causes of addiction and substance use disorders as well as innovative means to prevent substance abuse by remedying these root causes. - Addresses the unintended consequences of current approaches to reduce drug overdoses and substance abuse. - Examines solutions that offer a proactive approach to fighting addiction rather than a reactive approach focusing on treatment and recovery. - Explores opportunities to reduce the stigma associated with substance use disorders and celebrate success in overcoming addiction and substance abuse.

    Because the intent of the Innovator Award mechanism is to recognize these remarkably creative and innovative visionary individuals, rather than projects, the central feature of the award is the innovative contribution that the Principal Investigator (PI) can make toward ending breast cancer. The PI should have a record of challenging the status quo, shifting paradigms by changing a field of research or approach to patient care, exhibiting high levels of creativity, and demonstrating promise for continued innovation in future work. These rare individuals will be able to articulate a vision for ending breast cancer that challenges current dogma and demonstrates an ability to look beyond tradition and convention. The PI is also expected to be established in his/her field and have demonstrated success at forming and leading effective partnerships and collaborations. To further the development of innovative individuals and spark the generation of novel ideas, applications are required to incorporate the mentoring of promising junior investigators.

    The Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation supports nurse-led healthcare innovation and research, with the goal of improving patient care in hospitals, clinics, homes, and communities.     The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) invites qualified investigators from domestic institutions of higher education to submit an application for Superfund Research Program (SRP) R01 Individual Research Project grant program. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) focuses on research that will advance effectiveness of bioremediation through incorporation of advanced, novel materials science approaches. Bioremediation refers to the use of biota (bacteria, algae, fungi, plants, etc.) to reduce or detoxify hazardous substances in the environment. Bioremediation is a cost-effective, low-energy-intensive remedy that has contributed to the cleanup and closure of sites impacted by hazardous substances. In recent decades, bioremediation has advanced from reliance upon culturing and biogeochemical processing to a technology-enabled field enhanced by high throughput molecular approaches (e.g. omics and gene editing techniques). These new approaches have elucidated molecular mechanisms responsible for contaminant cleanup and provided insight for potential solutions to naturally degrade emerging contaminants. Concurrent advances in materials science approaches present an opportunity to integrate new approaches to further refine the mechanisms of bioremediation and optimize conditions to accelerate natural degradation and/or stabilization processes. This Funding Opportunity Announcement calls for teams including bioremediation materials science (nanotechnology, microenvironmental engineering) to submit proposals to advance the knowledge and practice of bioremediation to address current and emerging recalcitrant hazardous substances and complex mixtures.

    The primary objective of this FOA is to stimulate innovative Convergent Neuroscience (CN) approaches to establish causal and/or probabilistic linkages across contiguous levels of analysis (e.g., gene, molecule, cell, circuit, system, behavior) in an explanatory model of psychopathology. In particular, applicants should focus on how specific constituent biological processes at one level of analysis contribute to quantifiable properties at other levels, either directly or as emergent phenomena.  Although not required, it is preferable that applications link at least three levels of analysis and include an emphasis on genetics. The projects under this FOA will develop novel methods, theories, and approaches through a CN team framework, bringing together highly synergistic inter/transdisciplinary teams from neuroscience and "orthogonal" fields (e.g., data/computational science, physics, engineering, mathematics, and environmental sciences). Successful teams will combine, expand upon, or develop conceptual frameworks and theoretical approaches, and build explanatory computational models that connect contiguous levels of analysis. Such frameworks, theories, and computational explanatory models should be validated through experimental approaches to elucidate biological underpinnings of complex behavioral (including cognitive and affective) outcomes in psychopathology. Additionally, a goal of this program is to advance research in CN by creating a shared community framework of resources which may be used by the broader research community to further research, as such, successful team will have robust plan for sharing data and other resources.

American Diabetes Association Invites Applications for Research Awards | RFPs | PND - 0 views

    The American Diabetes Association's Core Research Program funds research with novel and innovative hypotheses in any area relevant to the etiology or pathophysiology of diabetes.  To that end, the organization is accepting applications for its Innovative Basic Science (IBS) and Innovative Clinical or Translational Science (ICTS) Research Awards. Through the IBS program, grants of up to $115,000 a year for up to three years will be awarded in support of basic research with novel and innovative hypotheses in any area relevant to the etiology or pathophysiology of diabetes. Through the ICTS program, grants of up to $200,000 a year for up to three years will be awarded in support of research performed in human subjects, or research approaches designed to accelerate the transition of scientific discoveries into clinical application. Studies supported by these awards must directly involve human samples and/or data and should offer considerable potential for advancing the cure, prevention, and/or treatment of diabetes.

    This announcement solicits applications for the Special Projects of National Significance Program (SPNS) initiative, Use of Social Media to Improve Engagement, Retention, and Health Outcomes along the HIV Care Continuum ¿ Demonstration Sites.  The purpose of this grant program is to support organizations that will implement, evaluate and disseminate findings from innovative methods for identifying, linking, retaining and improving health outcomes for HIV positive underserved, underinsured, hard-to-reach youth and young adults in HIV primary care and supportive services through the use of social media.  These methods are expected to include innovative system approaches using a variety of social media technologies or any other internet or mobile based applications, in the engagement and retention in care and viral load suppression of youth and young adults living with HIV.  The innovative system approaches proposed by the applicant organizations must be novel and will be tested and evaluated during the SPNS initiative, though certain components or tools of that system may have already been assessed through other studies.  Programs will be expected to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of their models¿ design including service utilization, treatment adherence, cost and impact on health-related outcomes, and to disseminate findings, best practices and lessons learned.  Successful applicants will be required to work collaboratively with a HRSA/HAB supported Evaluation and Technical Assistance Center (ETAC) throughout the four year project period.  This will include, but is not limited to, the collecting and reporting of data to the ETAC for a comprehensive multi-site evaluation, and the dissemination of successful models to the larger public health community.

The purpose of the Rural Health Care Coordination Network Partnership Program is to support the development of formal, mature rural health networks that focus on care coordination activities for the following chronic conditions: diabetes, congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Care coordination in the primary care practice involves deliberately organizing patient care activities and sharing information among all of the participants concerned with a patient¿s care to achieve safer and more effective care. Rural Americans are unhealthier, with higher rates of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, CHF, and COPD and have higher rates of high-risk behaviors such as smoking, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition.[1],[2],[3],[4] These high-risk behaviors cause many of the illnesses, suffering and deaths due to chronic diseases and conditions.[5] The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases and the high cost of health care in the U.S. bring treatment of the ¿whole¿ person to the forefront, especially as there are often psychosocial (psychological and social) issues related to chronic diseases; for example, there is a link between diabetes and depression. In addition, more mental health problems are seen in the primary care setting than other health care settings; thus, integrating behavioral health care into primary care helps address both the physical and psychosocial aspects of health and wellness.
